Early detection of skin cancer, especially malignant melanoma, is crucial for successful treatment and recovery. Melanoma, also known as black skin cancer, is one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer, but it can be well-managed if detected early. In our practice in Berlin Steglitz, we use state-of-the-art technology to conduct a comprehensive examination of your skin and detect any potential signs of skin cancer at an early stage. Regular check-ups are particularly important for those at high risk, such as individuals with numerous moles, a family history of skin cancer, or a history of intense sunburn.
The FotoFinder system is a cutting-edge tool for digital dermatoscopy, enabling a precise and comprehensive examination of the skin. Using FotoFinder, we create high-resolution full-body images that allow us to detect even the smallest changes on your skin. These images are stored and used as a reference during future check-ups to identify new lesions or changes in existing moles at an early stage. The computer-assisted analysis helps us reliably assess the malignancy of moles. This method provides the highest level of safety and enables us to detect skin cancer at a very early stage and treat it accordingly.
The A-B-C-D-E scheme is a proven method for self-examination of moles and helps you detect suspicious skin changes early:
Any change in the size, shape, color, or elevation of a mole over a short period can be an alarm signal.
You may be at higher risk if one or more of the following apply to you:
You have many or large moles.
You or a family member has had skin cancer.
You have unusual moles or moles that have recently changed.
You have fair skin that burns easily.
You have had frequent sunburns, especially during childhood.
You spend a lot of time in the sun or have used tanning beds in the past.
Newly formed moles
Color changes
Alterations in the area around a mole (e.g., redness, whitening, swelling)
Increase or decrease in size, thickness, or elevation
Bleeding moles
Unusual sensations (e.g., burning, itching, foreign body sensation)
Avoid excessive sun exposure, especially midday.
Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen with a high SPF.
Regularly examine your skin using the A-B-C-D-E scheme, and see a dermatologist immediately if you notice anything unusual.
Individuals at high risk should have a skin cancer screening at least once a year. If you have suspicious lesions or a personal or family history of skin cancer, more frequent examinations may be necessary.
Statutory health insurance covers a basic screening examination. For improved diagnostic accuracy, we routinely use an analog dermatoscope in our practice. This service is classified as an individual health service (IGeL) and is billed at €30.
For patients at risk or in cases of unclear findings, we recommend an additional digital photo documentation with computer-assisted follow-up analysis using FotoFinder technology. The cost for this enhanced diagnostic procedure is €90.
Private health insurers often reimburse these costs, provided that there is a documented medical indication.
By using FotoFinder technology in our practice in Berlin Steglitz, we offer you the best available method for early skin cancer detection and help you keep your skin healthy. Schedule an appointment for your skin cancer screening and benefit from our comprehensive service.
