Enjoying the spring sun

Why UV protection is already so important

When the first warm rays of sunshine hit your skin after long winter months, it often feels like a fresh start. The days grow brighter, we spend more time outdoors again, enjoying walks, sitting in cafés in the sun, or spending our first hours in the park. These early moments of spring feel especially intense—and that’s exactly why the sun’s power is often underestimated.

What many people don’t know: UV radiation isn’t just a concern in the height of summer. Even in spring, ultraviolet radiation can take a toll on the skin. While UVB rays primarily cause sunburn, UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and promote skin aging over the long term. Both contribute to the formation of free radicals, which damage cell structures. This can manifest not only as dryness, redness, or pigmentation spots, but can also increase the risk of skin cancer over time.

Particularly deceptive: The spring sun often feels pleasantly mild. Because it isn’t very hot outside yet, many people don’t feel the need to protect themselves. But especially after winter, the skin is often more sensitive, drier, and less accustomed to UV radiation. This makes it more susceptible to irritation and light-induced damage.

Good sun protection is therefore already an important part of daily skincare. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30—preferably 50—is recommended, especially for the face, neck, décolletage, and hands. These areas are particularly frequently exposed to the sun and show the first signs of light-induced skin changes early on.

In addition to sunscreen, simple everyday measures also help: sunglasses with UV protection, light clothing, a cap or hat, and taking breaks in the shade. Especially around noon, UV exposure is often higher than many people realize.

Our tip from a dermatological perspective: Don’t view sun protection as a seasonal obligation, but as a daily investment in the health of your skin. Starting early not only protects against acute damage but also safeguards your skin against premature aging in the long term.

That way, spring remains exactly what it should be: light, carefree, and full of beautiful sunny moments—with healthy, radiant skin.
